SD Cards With 4K Support

The SD Association announces a high-performance option and symbol for SD cards supporting 4K resolution video-- the Ultra High Speed (UHS) Class 3 (U3) symbol will indicate cards capable of recording 4K video.

Memory CardsThe classification will apply on SDXC (UHS-1 and UHS-II) and SDHC (UHS-I and UHS-II) memory cards and devices.

According to the association UHS Speed Class 3 defines minimum write speeds at 30Mbps to ensure high-quality video recording and playback from high-performance cameras and camcorders.

UHS Speed Class 3 devices will remain backwards compatible with existing SD memory cards.

“The world’s favorite SD memory card continues to evolve and meet shifting industry needs,” the SD Association says. “Our new UHS Speed Class 3 standard will give consumers and businesses more flexibility and capability as the market shifts to 4K2K video formats.”

Video at 4K resolutions involves horizontal resolutions of around 4000 pixels. Different specifications exist, including 4K UHD (3840x2160) and Digital Cinema Initiative (4096x2160).
