Huawei Launches P30 Smartphones

  • PDF

An event in Paris brings all the details on the P30, a series of flagship smartphones Huawei claims will do nothing less than "rewrite the rules of photography" through the addition of a four-camera setup.

Huawei P30The P30 comes in 2 variants, regular and Pro. The Pro is the model with the most photography chops, since it features a 40MP Super Spectrum sensor, an ultra-wide 20MP sensor, a "Periscope zoom" allowing for 5x optical zoom and a flight depth-sensing camera. The 40MP sensor swaps the regular RGB colour filter for RYYB (red, blue, yellow), an arrangement the company says absorbs 40% more light to allow for cleaner photos. In addition, the company says a combination of the 5x periscope zoom with data from the other sensors produces a 10x lossless zoom.

Huawei promises to fully present the P30 smartphone line later in March 2019, but WinFuture claims to have the full skinny on the two devices, including the full specs and official images.

Huawei P30The P30 comes in 2 flavours, regular and Pro, with the Pro being (obviously) the more high-end option. One reportedly very interesting feature in the P30 Pro is a big rear-facing camera offering no less than 10x zoom, a feature WinFuture say is the result of hybrid zoom. Essentially, the phone uses a periscope system to achieve the equivalent of 7.8x optical zoom. This is combined with data from the camera sensor and software enhancements to bring about the 10x figure.

Nokia 9 PureViewThe 5 cameras share the same specifications, since each features a 12MP sensor and an f/1.8 lens. Two of the cameras shoot in colour, while the other three are in monochrome. To snap a photo, the cameras shoot at different exposures at the same time, before the phone merges all the image data into a single, ultra-detailed shot. Nokia even claims the individual cameras can shoot multiple exposures on their own, adding even more data to the final image.
