In 2016, what advanced features in smartphones are you expecting vendors to release?

The smartphone is becoming an integral part of a bigger continuum of devices and smart objects as users increasingly live their lives in a "device mesh" environment, where they own multiple devices and use a combination of them that better fits the situation they are in.

In 2016, we expect vendors to offer more, and new, bundles of sensors and enhanced connectivity standards to support the role of the smartphone as the central hub for Internet of Things scenarios such as the connected home and smart workspaces.

Canonical takes to China's Meizu to bring the dream of an Ubuntu-powered smartphone to life-- and the result is the Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition, the "most sophisticated and feature-rich Ubuntu phone in the market."

Meizu Pro 5Announced ahead of MWC 2016, the Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition is a 5.7-inch handset with a 1920x108 resolution AMOLED display. It carries a 1.5GHz octa-core Samsung Exynos 7420 processor, 3/4GB RAM, 32/64GB storage, 21MP rear-/5MP front-facing cameras and a 3050mAh battery inside a metal body, making it identical to the regular, Android-powered Pro 5 in all but software.

Microsoft Goes Low-End With Lumia 650

Microsoft announces the Lumia 650-- a successor to the low-end Lumia 550 featuring a featuring an anodised aluminium border and a 5-inch 1280x720 resolution OLED display.

Lumia 650Specifications are fairly basic, being a quad-core 1.3GHz Snapdragon 212 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, 2000mAh battery and 8MP rear-/5MP front-facing cameras. It supports NFC and LTE connectivity and is fairly thin and light, being 6.9mm thick and weighing all of 122g.

The independent Vaio chooses a perhaps unusual operating system for its second smartphone-- Vaio Phone Biz is a sleek handset running on Microsoft-powered software, namely Windows 10 Mobile.

Vaio Phone BizFeaturing a style similar to the company's laptops, the Phone Biz is a 5.5-inch smartphone featuring a 1920x1080 resolution display, an octa-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm 617 CPU, 3GB RAM and a 13MP rear-facing camera. Also included is typical Microsoft software such as Office 365 and OneDrive.

Lenovo to Make Project Tango Smartphone

Lenovo announces it is working on a Project Tango-enabled smartphone at CES 2016, a collaboration with Google in consumer mobile devices equipped with depth perception.

Project Tango LenovoGoogle revealed Project Tango back in 2014. A brainchild of the search giant's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group, the project involves granting devices “human-like understanding of space and motion" through sensors and camera vision co-processors. So far it has only been seen in the wild in the shape of a couple of prototype devices-- a 5-inch smartphone and a 7-inch tablet, both carrying 2 back cameras, IR depth sensors and software handling 3D image capture.

Details on the Lenovo Tango-enabled device are lacking, since the company is still working on the final design. However it does say the device will be "less than 6.5-inches" in size and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
