Goodbye, Cius: Cisco Quits Tablets

  • PDF

So long, Cius, we hardly knew you-- Cisco stops spending on the Cius tablet and decides to leverage on other tablets with Jabber and own software deployments instead.

Cius tabletSVP of Telepresence Technology OJ Winge says "Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases."

The first Cisco foray in tablet space, the Cius is an enterprise-only tablet on sale through channel partners. Launched back in 2010, it is pricey ($750), runs on Android and has a 7" display. A fairly unremarkable (if not entirely forgettable) device, in other words.

Either way, here's for another dead Cisco hardware offering...

Nvidia Aims At Low-End Tablets

An interesting snippet emerges from the Nvidia annual stockholders' meeting-- the company is working on Kai, a "strategy" (if not a reference design) for cheaper, more powerful tablets carrying Tegra 3 processors.

Nvidia KaiAs VP Rob Csonger says "Our strategy on Android is simply to enable quad-core tablets running Android Ice Cream Sandwich to be developed and brought out to market at the $199 price point."

A means for vendors to beef up the Kindle Fire competitors, then? Perhaps. But back at CES 2012 Nvidia presented the ME370T, a quad-core tablet co-developed with Asus with a $250 price point.

We haven't anything about the ME370T since then-- perhaps it will be reborn with Kai branding? If not, Nvidia might simply usher a new range of cheaper Tegra 3-powered tablets.

Lenovo's mobile device strategy includes the K800 smartphone, one of the 1st Intel-powered Android smartphones. Expect to hear more on non-PC Lenovo offerings over the coming months, then.

LG launches the LG Cloud, an online service allowing customers to share content between various LG devices including PCs, smartphones and internet-connected Smart TVs.

LG CloudCurrently in free beta in S. Korea and the US, a global LG Cloud rollout should start from 2013. The company gives no details on pricing, but the service is heavily geared towards selling LG devices-- LG Smart TV and smartphone customers will get 6 months of 50GB of storage for free.

More interestingly it also allows the sharing of 3D video content between Optimus 3D smartphones and 3DTVs, with real-time transcoding making content playable in the format appropriate to the device in use. LG is but one of a number of companies trying to boost sales with cloud-based services-- Apple launched the iCloud service on 2011, and rumours insist Samsung is also launching an "S-Cloud" service sometime soon.
