IDC: Tablets Return to Growth in Q3

The global tablet market sees a return to growth in Q3 2019, IDC reports-- shipments total 37.6 million units, a 1.9% Y-o-Y increase, with Apple maintaining leadership of the market while Amazon beats Samsung to 2nd place.

The new iPad leads Apple tablet shipments to grow by 21.8% Y-o-Y in Q3 2019. It also brings a 31.4% share of the market, up from 26.3% in Q3 2018. The latest device includes the Smart Connector, and combined with the iPad OS Apple is the largest player in detachable/hybrid space, as well as a greater threat to the traditional PC market.

IDC: Apple Retains Lead in EMEA Tablets

The EMEA tablet market is down by -11.7% Y-o-Y in Q2 2019, IDC reports, with shipments reaching 9.6 million units, even if detachable/hybrid devices represent a bright spot with shipments growing by 11.8% Y-o-Y following 2 years of consecutive quarterly declines.

"The expectation of a detachable rebound in the market was finally realized in Q2 and on a bigger scale than anticipated," the analyst says. "This was mainly driven by shipment pull-in of the freshly released iPad Air, a budget alternative to the iPad Pro and a contender to the Surface Go in the midrange tablet market with keyboard capabilities that have the potential to become a back-to-school winner."

Gartner: Smartphone Sales Down Yet Again in Q2 2019

Global smartphone sales are down by -1.7% Y-o-Y to reach 368 million units in Q2 2019, Gartner reports, with the slowdown of demand for high-end models forcing vendors to bring premium features to low-priced devices.

“Demand for high-end smartphones has slowed at a greater rate than demand for midrange and low-end smartphones,” the analyst says. “To try to boost smartphone replacements, we’ve seen manufacturers bringing premium features such as multilens front/back cameras, bezel-less displays and large batteries from their flagship smartphones into lower-priced models."

SA: Huawei Sees Growth Even as Tablet Market Declines

According to Strategy Analytics, while global tablet shipments are down by -7% Y-o-Y in Q2 2019, Huawei manages to see a 4% Y-o-Y increase despite the current trade war, even if demand might shift to other vendors, namely Samsung and Lenovo.

"Samsung and Lenovo shipment growth exceeded market performance, yet still showed declines of -1% and -6%, respectively," the analyst says. "Samsung has been stabilising its tablet shipments over the last couple of quarters, but this is a big opportunity to regain some customers as we enter a period where Huawei will face significant headwinds outside of China. Lenovo also stands to benefit from this change in the competitive landscape, but I’m concerned that if the trade war widens, Lenovo could be among a group of Chinese companies that are targeted by the Trump administration.”

Gartner: Smartphone Sales to Further Fall in 2019

According to Gartner, global smartphone sales are to total 1.5 billion units in 2019, a -2.5% decline-- but the market should return to growth in 2020, thanks to the broader availability of 5G models and related service packages.

W. Europe is to see the second worst decline (-5.3%) in smartphone sales, following Japan (-6.5%). All mature markets face an oversupplied and commoditised smartphone market, with higher ASPs and no compelling utility or experiences for users to upgrade to. While high-end smartphone ASP increases have slowed down recently, vendors relying on replacement smartphone sales are still facing tough times.
