An LG Wearable for Kids

  • PDF

According to LG the KizON wristband is a wearable designed for kids, but it's really meant for parents-- after all, it is a means of tracking pre-school and primary school children's whereabouts on Android smartphones.

LG KizonIt uses wifi and GPS to provide real-time location information, and features a "One Step Direct Call" function allowing parents to communicate with their kids and vice versa. If a parent calls their child and gets no answer, the KizON automatically connects the call and lets parents listen to what is going on via built-in microphone.

A One Step Direct Call button also allows the wearer to dial a pre-configured phone number (changeable using the app), while a Location Reminder pushes location alerts at specific times throughout the day.

Google Makes VR Goggles… Out of Cardboard

  • PDF

The Google I/O 2014 conference might have been all about Android, but it was one unusual device-plus-app combination that really stole the scene-- Cardboard, Google's paper take on the Oculus Rift. Yes, really.

CardboardDescribed by Google as a "no-frills enclosure that transforms a phone into a basic VR headset," Cardboard reminds of the Vrizzmo, a low-cost VR headset consisting of a head harness and a pair of optical lenses. However unlike the Vrizzmo, the Cardboard headset is strictly DIY. It is, essentially, a corrugated cardboard (thus the name!) kit and a pair of lenses held together with strategically velcro tabs, magnets and rubber bands. Once assembled, all that's left is a smartphone and an appropriate app for admittedly basic VR experiences.

The 2-in-1 Battery and Charging Cable

  • PDF

JUMP CableNative Union presents a novel take on the spare mobile device charger with the JUMP Cable-- a charging cable with a built-in 800mAh battery providing faster charging and an extra bit of power.

The result of a successful Kickstarter campaign, the JUMP cable recharges up to 20-30% of a smartphone's battery, at least according to the company, all while serving as a regular charger cable replacement.

A small square box in the middle of the cable hides the battery. When not in use it holds the cable snugly in place, with slots holding the connectors. AutoCharge technology ensures that once a device is fully charged power is redirected to the battery.

Withings Hides Fitness Tracker in Analogue Watch

  • PDF

Connected health device maker Withings presents a piece of wearable electronics in fashionable disguise-- the Activité, a health tracker tucked inside a French-designed, Swiss-made analogue wristwatch.

ActiviteUnlike the silicon bracelets making the majority of health trackers, the Activité features round chrome construction and a leather band. The only addition betraying its wearable electronics status is a second, smaller dial tucked in the bottom-right corner showing the user's fitness goals of the day.

The device tracks user movements via accelerometer, and Bluetooth LE connectivity pairs it with with a (currently iPhone-only) Health Mate  coach app to display fitness data such as steps made, calories burned and sleep patterns.
