Sony's IFA Goes Xperia Z3

Sony goes all out at IFA 2014 as it reveals a slew of mobile devices with the Xperia Z3 smartphone and tablet series, an accessory allowing one to combine mobiles with PlayStation controllers and wearable devices.

Sony IFA 2014The Xperia Z3 series features 3 devices-- the flagship Z3 smartphone, its smaller Z3 Compact and the self-descriptive Z3 Tablet Compact. All build on the industrial design seen in the previous Z2 generation, with a slimmer version of the same minimalist stylings.

The Z3 is the series' flagship device. It features a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 Triluminos display, weighs 152g, is 7.3mm thin and is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core CPU, 3GB RAM and a 3100mAh battery. Like the Z2 construction is in aluminum with nylon corners.

Sony sells the device on the camera-- a 20.7MP number with a 1/2.3 Exmor RS sensor, Bionz image processing engine and 25mm wide-angle lens. The company says the device also features ISO 12800 sensitivity, as well as improved SteadyShot technology.

The Z3 Compact is near-identical to the Z3, only with a smaller 4.3-inch 1240 x 720 display, less (2GB) RAM, 2600mAh battery and what Sony says is a "liquid" translucent plastic frame.

Samsung Intros Curvy Smartwatch

Samsung announces what it claims is "the next generation smart wearable device"-- the Gear S, a Tizen-powered smartwatch with an "elegant" curved Super AMOLED display and 3G connectivity.

Samsung Gear SThe 2-inch display is designed to fit around the contours of the wrist, while 3G allows independent operation. And, yes, that means one can take and calls directly from their wrists, Dick Tracy-style. Or simply forward them to a smartphone, if they will.

Bluetooth and wifi provide further connectivity, while the hardware is IP67-certified for dust and water resistance.

Health conscious customers are also catered for with a bevy of sensors (accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitors, compass, UV and ambient light), GPS, S Health features and a pre-installed Nike+ Running app.

Archos Smartphones, Tablets at IFA 2014

Archos reveals new smartphones and tablets ahead of IFA 2014, with its first Windows devices in the shape of the 40 Cesium and 80 Cesium, as well as Android options such as the 50b Platinum and the 101 Oxygen.

Archos TabletThe 40 Cesium is a low-cost (£79) 4-inch Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 CPU, the same inside the Nokia Lumia 530 and Motorola Moto E.

It also features 3 colored back cases in yellow, blue and black.

Meanwhile the 80 Cesium is a Windows 8.1 tablet with an 8-inch IPS display. It runs on an unspecified Intel quad-core processor, and is also marketed as being an affordable (£129) means to "replicate the user experience of your desktop on the go."

A Big Tablet for the Family

Child-focused tablet maker Fuhu unveils what it says are "the world's biggest Android tablets made for sharing"-- the nabi Big Tab HD 20" and the nabi Big Tab HD 24".

nabi big tabletAs the names suggests, the two oversized tablets feature 20- and 24-inch displays respectively. According to Fuhu both are designed for the entire family, with 15-point capacitative touchscreens, quad-core Tegra 4 processors, 16GB built-in storage and a "revolutionary" carrying frame one can either adjust to any angle or remove for surface/tabletop use.

A built-in short-term battery allows easy portability, if for limited distances around the house.

The OS of choice is Android modified by the Fuhu Blue Morpho overlay adding comprehensive parental control and kid-focused features. Fuhu also adds a number of apps, games and a videos from the likes of Disney and Cartoon Network.

Bloomberg: Anti-Glare Display for New iPad

Bloomberg reports Apple suppliers have already started producing new iPad models, chief of which being a full-size number with a 9.7-inch display possibly featuring a new anti-glare coating.

iPad child The news site adds manufacturing complications related to the anti-reflection coating (one designed to make the display easier to read) might be reason restrictions on larger iPad supplies. Either way the new iPad will be supposedly unveiled by either Q2 2014's end or on early Q3.

A 7.9-inch iPad mini is also starting production soon enough, and should be available by end 2014, Bloomberg continues.
